Exploring the Haunted Mansion of Buenos Aires

The castle with the most history in Buenos Aires, known as the haunted mansion on Avenida Alvear, stands as an iconic building of the Belle Époque in the heart of Recoleta. Although it is still inhabited today, its present is far from its past glory, having not been remodeled.

The Hume residence, as it is known, dates back to the late 19th century and has witnessed various memorable events throughout its more than 130 years of history. In 1893, it hosted one of the first art exhibitions in the city, and in 1913, the renowned landscaper Carlos Thays designed the gardens that are still preserved.

Declared a National Historical Monument in 2002, this mansion has been described by locals as one of the most "haunted" or "eerie" in Buenos Aires. Built by the railway entrepreneur Alejandro Hume, the residence stands out for its design without apparent remodels and its pool, considered avant-garde for its time.

Over the years, the Hume residence passed into the hands of the Duhau brothers, who also erected the nearby Palacio Duhau. Currently, the property belongs to María Susana Maguire Duhau de Biocca and her husband, although it remains closed to the public despite being a recognized historical treasure. The two-level structure, with a main floor and an upper floor for bedrooms, has remained practically intact since its construction.
